        <title>Unknown (UN) Value Representation</title>
          <para xml:id="para_768f8d76-226d-44f6-a9ee-44cf0ef649af">The Unknown (UN) VR shall only be used for Private Attribute Data Elements and Standard Data Elements previously encoded as some DICOM VR other than UN using the DICOM Default Transfer Syntax (Implicit VR Little Endian), and whose Value Representation is currently unknown. As long as the VR is unknown the Value Field is insensitive to <emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="strikethrough">Little/Big Endian </emphasis></emphasis>byte ordering and shall not be 'byte-swapped' (see <xref linkend="sect_7.3" xrefstyle="select: label"/>). In the case of undefined length sequences, the value shall remain in implicit VR form. See Section 7.8<!--<xref linkend="sect_7.8" xrefstyle="select: label"/>--> for a description of Private Data Attribute Elements and section 10 and Annex A<!--<xref linkend="chapter_A" xrefstyle="template:Annex %n"/>--> for a discussion of Transfer Syntaxes.</para>

            <title><emphasis role="strikethrough">Big Endian Versus </emphasis>Little Endian Byte Ordering</title>
            <para><emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="underline">All unretired Transfer Syntaxes in DICOM require the use of Little Endian Byte Ordering.</emphasis></emphasis></para>
            <para xml:id="para_fe41f7af-a4ee-4a9f-8e74-e115224086d3"><emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="strikethrough">Another component of the encoding of a Data Set that shall be agreed upon by communicating Application Entities is the Byte Ordering.</emphasis></emphasis></para>
            <para xml:id="para_a38977c0-90cf-409a-8aad-1f9573e4e862">Little Endian byte ordering is defined as follows:</para>

            <para xml:id="para_01d35885-9117-4583-a818-eb9468e2e9c3">Byte ordering is a component of an agreed upon Transfer Syntax (see Section 10<!--<xref linkend="chapter_10" xrefstyle="template:Section %n"/>-->). The default DICOM Transfer Syntax, which shall be supported by all AEs, uses Little Endian encoding and is specified in Section A.1<!--<xref linkend="sect_A.1" xrefstyle="select: label"/>-->. Alternate <emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="underline">Little Endian</emphasis></emphasis>Transfer Syntaxes<emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="strikethrough">, some of which use Big Endian encoding</emphasis></emphasis>, are also specified in Annex A<!--<xref linkend="chapter_A" xrefstyle="template:Annex %n"/>-->.</para>

                <para xml:id="para_e28249f6-e346-45cb-bf58-62c561fcf88d">The Command Set structure as specified in PS3.7<!--<olink targetdoc="PS3.7" targetptr="PS3.7" xrefstyle="select: labelnumber"/>--> is encoded using the Little Endian Implicit VR Transfer Syntax.</para>

            <para xml:id="para_f19daaf4-7894-4138-8db1-20e87d232a62">In the <emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="strikethrough">default</emphasis></emphasis> case of Little Endian encoding, Big Endian Machines interpreting Data Sets shall do 'byte swapping' before interpreting or operating on certain Data Elements. The Data Elements affected are all those having VRs that are multiple byte Values and that are not a character string of 8-bit single byte codes. VRs constructed of a string of characters of 8-bit single byte codes are really constructed of a string of individual bytes, and are therefore not affected by byte ordering. The VRs that are not a string of characters and consist of multiple bytes are:</para>

When the Overlay Data crosses a word boundary in the OW case, or a byte boundary in the OB case, it shall continue to be encoded, least significant bit to most significant bit, in the next word, or byte, respectively (see Annex D<!--<xref linkend="chapter_D" xrefstyle="template:Annex %n"/>-->). For Overlay Data encoded with the Value Representation OW, the byte ordering of the resulting 2-byte words is defined by the Little Endian <emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="strikethrough">or Big Endian </emphasis></emphasis>Transfer Syntax<emphasis role="bold"><emphasis role="strikethrough">es</emphasis></emphasis> negotiated at the Association Establishment (see Annex A<!--<xref linkend="chapter_A" xrefstyle="template:Annex %n"/>-->).</para>

      <para xml:id="para_d6734089-67bc-433e-87f7-40f00a859a9d">Native format Pixel Cells are encoded as the direct concatenation of the bits of each Pixel Cell, the least significant bit of each Pixel Cell is encoded in the least significant bit of the encoded word or byte, immediately followed by the next most significant bit of each Pixel Cell in the next most significant bit of the encoded word or byte, successively until all bits of the Pixel Cell have been encoded, then immediately followed by the least significant bit of the next Pixel Cell in the next most significant bit of the encoded word or byte. The number of bits of each Pixel Cell is defined by the Bits Allocated (0028,0100) Data Element Value. When a Pixel Cell crosses a word boundary in the OW case, or a byte boundary in the OB case, it shall continue to be encoded, least significant bit to most significant bit, in the next word, or byte, respectively (see Annex D<!--<xref linkend="chapter_D" xrefstyle="template:Annex %n"/>-->). For

      <title>Waveform Data and Related Data Elements</title>
      <para xml:id="para_9a8e1cfc-73c8-4db2-a88a-040b4251f39d">The DICOM protocol provides for the exchange of encoded time-based signals, or waveforms, encoded in the Waveform Data Element (5400,1010).</para>
      <note>
        <para xml:id="para_d143f2ad-4d5f-4107-abff-0f8e36db57ec">Per Section 7.6<!--<xref linkend="sect_7.6" xrefstyle="select: label"/>-->, an IOD supporting multiple sets of Waveform Data will encapsulate Data Element (5400,1010) within a Sequence.</para>

      <para xml:id="para_d9e0d1cb-8342-422f-a1fa-e5bc837581f4">Encoded Waveform Data of various bit depths is accommodated through the Waveform Bits Allocated (5400,1004) Data Element. This element defines the size of each waveform data sample within the Waveform Data (5400,1010). Allowed values are 8 and 16 bits.</para>
      <para xml:id="para_4e05e669-69cc-48b4-b632-33d56cefab1c">The Value Representation of the Waveform Data (5400,1010) shall be OW; OB shall be used in cases where Waveform Bits Allocated has a value of 8, but only with Transfer Syntaxes where the Value Representation is explicitly conveyed.</para>
